As counterfeiters are getting more and more sophisticated in producing fake products, leading global manufacturers had to increase their efforts to thwart counterfeiters’ attempts. JTEKT takes its social responsibility to protect its customers’ safety seriously and to that end has established an anti-counterfeiting working group in 2014. Shortly thereafter the working group implemented a 3 step plan to protect its Koyo brand of bearings. The three steps include security enhanced packaging, awareness building activities, and customs raids and seizures.
In 2016, JTEKT introduced new packaging for their Koyo line of bearings with several new built-in security enhancements to assist in identifying the authenticity of bearings. In addition to new graphics, one of these enhancements includes an easily visible anti-counterfeit hologram.
While counterfeiting is expanding to reach other parts of the globe; SE Asia continues to be the most problematic area for counterfeit activities and where JTEKT spends the majority of its educational and seizure activities:
- JTEKT is sponsoring a radio campaign in Cambodia promoting usage of authorized distributors and awareness of the dangers of counterfeit products.
- In Myanmar, JTEKT ran an awareness campaign in major newspapers and issued a public notice to over 100 dealers.
- Even after a major JTEKT raid 10 years ago which resulted in the closure of several large counterfeit operations, the Philippines continues to be an active area of counterfeit activities. JTEKT is partnering with local customs and its authorized distributors to conduct additional raids.
